Sarah Hatton

Artist statement- "The link between neonicotinoid pesticides and the worldwide decline of bee populations is a crisis that cannot be ignored. I have arranged thousands of dead honeybees in mathematical patterns symbolically linked to monoculture crops, such as the Fibonacci spiral found in the seed head of the sunflower. The viewer experiences the vertigo of this lifeless swarm, a dizzying optical illusion that echoes the bees’ loss of ability to navigate due to the toxins locked within the very source of their sustenance".

Whilst looking for artists who are working on similar projects to myself, I came across the photographic artist Sarah Hatton. Her images are created by using dead bees places into patterns. The images are very interesting visually but I do feel are too removed from her brief which is to show "dizzying optical illusion that echoes the bees’ loss of ability to navigate due to the toxins locked within the very source of their sustenance" the images are far more about pattern and form than they are the actual bees. By this I mean by trying to create images that show the "dizziness" that the bees feel, the images are far to uniformed and doesn't show this lost of inhibition she is describing.
